July 2026 ⚽ Sad Mick Jagger

2026-07-23

Oi! from South East London,

Much to say much to do. Back in the studio and hilariously timed to watch Argentina play the worst final in human history live on air. No thinkpieces here, still spellbound by Robbie Williams’ wraparound shades. I have a screamo 7” featuring the guy who designed the Rolling Stones cap Mick Jagger was wearing every time he was on camera. The world is an odd place.

First layer of importance! Two shows by yours truly in varying styles upcoming! This weekend BP puts on his Another Subculture hat for Slumberland / Static Shock Oakland power poppers Neutrals, plus the return of Upset The Rhythm’s Marcel Wave, synth-punks Morreadoras and the enigmatic Benny Lager and The Tops:

Flyer for the next Another Subculture show

Then in August we link back up RS style for this one featuring some killer mates playing wild new outfits. The Gall have just been seen finishing up a few dates with US freaker noise crew and occasional puppet show Acid 87 and all reports point to it being unmissable. Xanax are on that Gob Nation milieu and new recordings are more dancefloor-filling and punchy than ever. Don’t miss!

Finally, if you happen to be in Finland this weekend – catch Vic playing in Traidora at Puntala Rock with The Mob, Industry, Ayucaba and many many more.

BEN

Hey! (Straw. I miss the rain.)

We are staring down the barrel at the end of summer, the grass is a fire risk, my afternoon has been spent phoning lost property. Extremely nice to be back in a live studio again, and yes the timing made us both glad that England wasn’t involved and that King’s Cross’ big boat screen was busy showing a Top Gun sequel like nothing had ever happened. God, I’m glad Spain won.

I am holding a mystery record in a charity shop: "The Organ and Pianos of Bobby Cole: "JUST LOVE DANCING".
I sure do.

Always worth putting music of all genres on the sticks, in case one of us goes down a particular rabbit hole; my only regret is that during our Hardcore Interlude I didn’t put some Haywire on, the band with quite simply the dumbest band logo I will ever clap eyes on. (Do not wear the hoodie to your nan’s.) Can’t go wrong with a Bobby tip though; Total Con’s record sounding like a toy car that’s been wound up and ready to fly down the stairs.

I’ve been lacking in gig-action this month, the summer activities more in the direction of family birthdays and plans to escape to islands, and I really do fancy going to a gig where I can do my head in and watch some spinning tops. Maybe United & Strong is it, maybe I’ll just go see the Nits on their victory lap. There’s a Bugged Out! anniversary night I’ve been invited to, but that’s more for realising that White Heat was two decades ago… you’ll know if I’ve gone if the selections start to (electro)clash. Saturday should get the fires burning - come on down

Graffiti on the train
Take care, everyone!

VIC

Checking in from the Finnish woodlands this month, I’ve been post-degree and laid out for the most part. However, I found time recently to enjoy Category H Film Club screening one of the weirdest movies of all time: Bones.

Screenshot from 'Bones'

Ever seen Snoop Dogg play an undead drug baron out for revenge and obsessed with Pam Grier? Friends of the show will know me as a storied fan of Tales From The Crypt and its offshoot movies – particularly Demon Knight (stupid sexy Satan Billy Zane). Ernest Dickerson had come off the back off that absolute banger when he put his hand to Bones, which features talking dogs, cannon-style vomit and some of the best and worst practical effects ever put to cinema. I have no interest in The Odyssey and all the interest in Jackass: Best and Last. I am a true cinephile.

Other observations: I spent the weekend in Berlin where I got to the killer Einhundert (upcoming at Ormside Projects in August). I heard at least three Kelela songs, making my absolutely optimal clubnight. I’m still not 100% on that new “rock” record, but honestly she can do what she wants.

Finally, I also got to guest on ultimo homie BB’s Refuge Worldwide show The Spiral Times! Dropping that below for a little extra mix action:

See you in the pit! Do not forget to show out for the Filton 25 trials, which remain ongoing! FREE OLA FREE ‘EM ALL.
